Many scientists (including those who studies cicadas) recommend human consumption of periodic cicadas as local wildlife do not rely on them for survival.  Insects are a great sustainable protein source and most cultures eat them for both survival and enjoyment.  Aristotle enjoyed them, John the Baptist survived the desert with them, Bob Dylan wrote a song about them. We will always offer vegan chocolate for those with different views.

Remember, every purchase supports employment of individuals with intellectual or mental health differences.  We hire graduates of  Sunflower Bakery and clients of Cornerstone Montgomery.

From Market Watch:

In 2004, a Bloomington, Ind., man was hospitalized with a severe allergic reaction after cooking and eating 30 cicadas. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America has warned that those allergic to shellfish — as the Bloomington man was — may have reactions to the bugs. The likely culprit: chitin, present in both shrimp shells and cicada exoskeletons. (Both cicadas and shrimp belong to the same phylum, arthropoda, in the scientific classification system.) There’s also the risk of reactions to pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals cicadas were exposed to during their years underground.
